Keeping Within the Law

We've received a few e-mails about the new subscriber-only website, Keeping Within the Law, this week and I'm sorry to say there is a delay. However, full information on how to subscribe will be available when the site launches in Autumn 2007. In the meantime, for comments and news before the launch please take a look at Paul Pedley's blog.

Thank you.

CILIP in Second Life

A colleague, Mark Taylor, mentioned to me at Umbrella last week that CILIP was to have a virtual office on Second Life and the details have now been confirmed...

CILIP will have a virtual office on Second Life from 12pm on Thursday 19 July.

Apparently it's a developing piece of work, but it could provide a new platform to share information, network and publicise the benefits, activities, events, products, services etc. that CILIP offers.

To get an idea of what he is talking about you can see a screenshot or two via http://communities.cilip.org.uk/blogs/umbrella/archive/2007/07/03/umbrella-2007-second-life-virtual-conference-session.aspx

If you are interested you need to dowload some software and get set up via www.secondlife.com

It all looks very exciting.

Umbrella 2007

I'll be at Umbrella 2007 tomorrow so if you're there feel free to drop by the CILIP stand and say hello. Don't forget, there will be a 30% discount on any orders taken at Umbrella, including the following two new books out this month:

Providing Effective Library Services for Research
Jo Webb, Pat Gannon-Leary and Moira Bent

The information needs of researchers and the ways in which the quality of information provision can be enhanced for researchers are currently a focus of attention globally, and are major priorities for higher education.

This book will inform and advise all those who work with researchers in libraries, combining practical advice with an exploration of fundamental issues relating to the relationship between research and libraries. It is essential reading for all who work in academic and research libraries, and will be of particular value to newly qualified and practising liaison and research support librarians.

June 2007; 296pp; hardback; 978-1-85604-589-6; £39.95
(£31.96 to CILIP Members)

This book defines clearly what should and should not be tolerated in a healthy and safe working environment, and introduces the reporting procedures and communication skills leading to conflict resolution, enabling both employees and managers to consider situations consistently, based on risk assessment previously carried out.

This book is essential reading for employees at all levels, and also for managers, team leaders, supervisors, personnel and human resources staff, complaints officers, union officers and anyone else in the information organization who may be called upon to deal with people.

June 2007; 160pp; paperback; 978-1-85604-613-8; £29.95
(£23.96 to CILIP Members)

Information World Review

There are two more excellent reviews of recent Facet books in the June 2007 issue of Information World Review.

In brief, the first applauds Digital Preservation as a 'wise and witty take on digital preservation' and the second refers to Essential Thesaurus Construction as 'All in all, a commendable book'.

The reviews are not yet on the IWR website but I'm sure they will be soon. Otherwise, you'll have to check out the print version.
